The UK Government has announced a number of measures to help support individuals and businesses in this testing climate.
The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme was launched to support the economy during this challenging time caused by the Coronavirus pandemic. The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme’s purpose is to minimise the loss of jobs.
However, the scheme has caused a fair amount of questions that have been asked around eligibility and monitoring.
Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme
The UK Government originally stated that only employees who were on their employer’s PAYE payroll on 28th February 2020 will be eligible for the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme. Presumably, the reason for this was to prevent abuse of the scheme. It also provides an easy way for HMRC to police the system.
On the 15th April, the government announced that it has revised the cut-off date for employees eligible for furlough leave to the 19th March 2020. This is will help protect those who had just started a new job at the time the lockdown was announced.
The forgotten employees
There a large number of employees that will end up without a job, though no fault of their own.
The majority of employees are subject to notice periods of between 4 and 12 weeks. A number of employees will have served their notice to terminate their employment in order to start a new role before prior to the Coronavirus outbreak.
Many of these individuals would have been looking forward to starting their new jobs, but will have been disappointed when their new employer is unable to employ them because their place of business has temporarily closed down and/or is suffering financial difficulty as a result of Covid-19.
The government’s aim is to support those affected by the pandemic and retain as many jobs as possible, particularly for those whose jobs would have otherwise been lost. Urgent attention and support is needed for the number of people who were in-between jobs when the crisis occurred.
